MD Education

MD training courses offered by Dr. Mark Terry and Dr. Michael Straiko

Clinic and Surgery – Dr. Terry and Dr. Straiko offer several MD training courses. Courses are offered most weeks and can be flexible on request by surgeons.

Wet Lab – Lions VisionGift is proud to offer surgeons a wet lab alongside MD training courses with Dr. Terry and Dr. Straiko. We feel that the very personalized experience and one-on-one training that occurs with our courses allows you to feel comfortable in returning home to provide safe and effective surgery for your very first patient. We also encourage you to keep in contact with us with any problems, concerns, or just questions that you may have as you proceed with your clinical programs.

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (“DALK”)

The removal of the layers of the cornea above Descemet membrane. This surgical treatment of corneal ectasias, keratoconus, and cornea damage allows for the retention of the patients healthy endothelium and the replacement of unhealthy corneal tissue.

Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (“DMEK”)

The latest iteration of endothelial keratoplasty. It replaces only Descemet’s membrane and endothelium, and leaves the patient’s cornea closer to its original condition than any other transplant technique.

Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (“DSAEK”)

The most common iteration of endothelial keratoplasty. DSAEK involves stripping the patient’s descemet membrane and replacing it with eye bank prepared tissue.

Course Outlines

Dr. Mark Terry and Dr. Michael Straiko each offer individualized 3-day courses.

Most surgeons visiting to take the course join their visiting surgeon either Monday or Wednesday morning at Devers Eye Institute which is located in Portland Oregon at 8:30 in the clinic. This allows them to meet their training physician and the chance to observe follow up cases. Visiting surgeons will also be provided paper and digital information sources for review at their leisure.

Surgical observations occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Surgical days start at 7:45 and will continue all day or until cases are complete. In general, most surgical days end between 4 and 7 pm.

The day after surgery, visiting surgeons return to the clinic and observe the one day post ops. Additionally, the day after surgery, Lions VisionGift offers a  wet lab opportunity for DMEK, DSAEK, and DALK as a skills transfer part of the course. Wet labs will be performed at the eye bank itself, located several miles from Devers Eye Institute. Usually, visiting surgeon observe one graft preparation by an eye banking technician and then proceed through the wet lab, performing procedures using human cadaver eyes and eye bank prepared tissue.
