Eye Bank Prepared ‘Pre-Stripped’ Tissue for DMEK Surgery

Eye Bank Prepared ‘Pre-Stripped’ Tissue for DMEK Surgery
Michael D. Straiko, M.D.

In this video Dr Michael Straiko at the Devers Eye Institute in Portland Oregon is using corneal transplant tissue that has been specially prepared by the highly skilled technicians at Lions VisionGift in Portland Oregon. The type of transplant in this video is a DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty). In this type of transplant only the dysfunctional inner layers of the cornea are replaced. This technique allows for a safer surgery and a more rapid recovery than conventional transplants. This is the latest iteration of endothelial keratoplasty. Having tissue that has been specially prepared for the surgeon by an experienced technician is a great benefit to the surgeon and patient.
